Hamilton's Javier Muñoz has shared his experience battling cancer. Following a two-month treatment, the actor, who plays the title role once a week, is back at the Richard Rodgers Theatre as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s alternate.
“I spent about six weeks not wanting to think about it, face it, deal with it,” Muñoz told the New York Post about the cancer diagnosis he received in October. “I’d just call out or push through...I had never felt fear before like this in my life.” The following month, he left the show to undergo radiation treatment and physical therapy.
Muñoz credits the Hamilton company for their tremendous support during the ordeal. Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Aaron Burr in the megahit musical, organized a drive with his castmates to provide meals for Muñoz while he was on leave.
Muñoz, who also covered for Miranda in In the Heights, stepped back into Hamilton earlier this year. When he took the stage on February 14, his parents, who both battled cancer 12 years ago, were in the audience, celebrating their 56th anniversary.
Broadway.com wishes Muñoz all the best as he continues on his path to a full and safe recovery.
